GREY KANGAROO

Grey Kangaroo
Homeland: Eastern Australia’s open woodlands and grasslands

Eats: Grasses and shrubs, much like a sheep

Fun facts:

When grey kangaroos are born, we’re less than an inch long, and about the weight of a nickel. In addition, we’re blind and not fully formed. Despite our tiny size and blindness, a newborn kangaroo somehow manages to crawl into its mama’s pouch. The baby kangaroo, known as a joey, will stay there drinking milk and growing for six or seven months before it’s ready to come out. The joey spends a total of 300 days or more in the pouch – it’s the longest pouch life of any marsupial (pouched animal). We sure are lucky snuggly babies!

A really fast grey kangaroo can jump as far as 44 feet in a single bound! Superman would be proud.

• If you had to take a grey kangaroo out to find shoes, you’d have a problem. Our feet can be up to 18 inches long! That’s great for hopping, but bad for shoe shopping. Our long feet help us reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. With feet like that, who needs sneakers?
