Fun Facts:
It still baffles people to see zebras mixed in with farm animals. But were part of the horse family, so its not all that odd when you think about it.
What do you get when you cross a zebra and a donkey? A zonkey! With all the zebras and donkeys running around my farm, you may well be seeing a zonkey on the next edition of Heres Looking at You, Kid!
You may be wondering how our stripes help protect us. (After all, theres not a lot of black and white striping in nature to help camouflage us.) Human have developed some interesting theories about our stripes. Some say our stripes actually make it hard to see us in the light and shadow patterns of African grasslands. (I do, however, tend to stand out like a sore thumb when on my lush green farm. Fortunately, there arent any hungry lions roaming around, so blending in isnt really important.) Another theory about our stripes is that our coats act as a bright signal to other herd members. Yet another is that the stripes of a herd thats running in different directions make it hard for a predator to focus. Whatever the reason, I think our stripes help make us look very cool.
Zebras can run fast up to 40 miles per hour if we have to. Plus were very good at using our hind feet to kick in defense. These traits come in handy in the wild: Zebras are lions favorite food. (Im sure glad I live on a farm.)
