Rooster (Chicken)Fun Facts:

• Humans may think they rule the roost, but I’ve got news for you: There are more chickens on Earth than there are people! In the United States, there are 450 million chickens, in China a few billion – and I’m not just pulling your drumstick.

• We roosters are very good at the “cock-a-doodle-doo” thing (actually, that’s not what we really say, but I’ll let that slide). But did you know that if a rooster isn’t around, a hen often takes over our job? Yep! She’ll stop laying eggs and start crowing!

Chickens aren’t known for our ability to fly. In fact, we’re pretty bad at it. The longest chicken flight on record lasted about 13 seconds. But that doesn’t stop us from roosting in trees at night. A few flaps, and we’re up!

Chickens have no teeth, so we rely on something inside, called a gizzard, to grind up our food for us.

• I was so itch, itch, itchy that day you saw me on the video. I don’t know what that was all about, but at least I know it wasn’t chicken pox! Chickens don’t actually have anything to do with chicken pox. In fact, the name “chicken pox” actually comes from an old English term, “gigan pox,” which means “itching pox.” (And you thought roosters didn’t know anything about the English language.)
