Whoa Nellie, that’s a lotta horse flesh! • One of my old friends holds the record for the longest horse tail ever: Her cream-colored tail measured 22 feet. How’d you like to have to brush that out every day? • Do you know the difference between a pony and a horse? Barely a centimenter, in some cases! Horses are measured in “hands.” (As opposed to feet?) Each hand is four inches (10 centimeters). Ponies are 14.2 hands or less at the withers – the area between the shoulders. Horses are taller than 14.2 hands. • You can tell the age of a horse by looking at his teeth. A horse doesn’t get all of his teeth until age 5. (Male horses get 40. Females, 36.)
