DONKEY

DonkeyFun Facts:

• Donkeys are members of the equine family, which includes horses and zebras.
Like horses, we can be ridden, or even pull buggies. We also make great pack animals, and are gentle and loyal.

• Everyone thinks donkeys are stubborn, but we’re really not.
We just like to think about things before we act on them. Actually, part of what people see as stubbornness is actually just a donkey’s self-preservation. We donkeys prefer to do what is good for us, and this isn’t always what humans want us to do. (For example, we don’t usually like to get our feet wet. Unlike our horse cousins, it’s very hard to convince us to go through water. Smart? I think so. Stubborn? Nah!)

Another animal who has a reputation for being stubborn is the mule. It should come as no surprise that mules are very closely related to donkeys. In fact, mules are a cross between a male donkey and a female horse. (But when you cross a female donkey and a male horse, you get a “hinny.” Go figure!)

• Donkeys make wonderful “sheep dogs”!
Once we bond with sheep, we’ll faithfully guard them against coyotes and dangerous dogs. We sleep next to the sheep at night, and alert them if danger lurks. We’ll even chase and trample the predator if need be. (We also take care of goats - and sometimes cows - like this.)
