HOLSTEIN COW

Holstein CowFun Facts:

• There are more than 900 breeds of cows throughout the world!

• Got milk? Have we ever! We Holsteins produce the most milk of any breed cow. In fact, a girlfriend of mine in Colorado holds the milk producing record: 120,000 glasses in one year. Got cookies?

The average dairy cow milked twice a day produces about 10 gallons of milk a day. That’s 80 pounds. I’ll tell you, it’s an udder relief to get that off our chests.

Cows babysit each other’s calves! When a few calves are born in a herd, one or two will watch the newborns while the rest of the new moms head off for something to eat or drink. Even bulls take turns babysitting!

• We cows have our ups and downs: A cow lies down and stands up about 14 times a day! Considering we weigh about 1,400 pounds, that’s a lot of heavy lifting.

• What makes a Holstein cow like a giraffe, zebra, or tiger? A Holstein’s spots are like fingerprints, with no two of us having the same markings. Check it out next time you see a field full of cows.

We have all kinds of different “moos,” depending on what we’re trying to communicate. It’s kind of a secret cow language! We also use body language and tail position when we can see each other.

Cows eat up to 100 pounds of grass a day. Speaking of which, thank you for feeding me that grass! I was SO hungry! (Sorry about that drool. I just couldn’t help myself.)
